Studies should come first, youths told

> The younger generation should not be too obsessed with becoming celebrities to the point of ignoring their studies.

The Tunku Mahkota of Johor’s consort Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris said that there were many television programmes offering youths a shot at fame and many were now no longer interested in furthering their studies.

She said it was waste of Government’s funds in establishing world-class infrastructure such as universities if the youths did not take the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies.

“Don’t just pursue the dream of being a celebrity but remember the importance of education. Our youths should make excellence in education their objectives in life and aim to be professionals such as engineers or doctors,” she was quoted as saying in Berita Minggu after receiving an honorary doctorate in education from the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn.

Businesses should review prices of goods and services following petrol price cut

> Mingguan Malaysia highlighted the calls by various consumer groups for the prices of goods and services to be reduced in line with the Government’s lowering of fuel prices.

Muslim Consumers Association secretary-general Datuk Dr Maamor Osman said the latest measure by the Government was expected to influence the prices of goods and services in the market.

“All businesses based on the costs of fuel will have to re-look the prices of their goods and charges of their services. For instance, bus and taxi operators will have to reconsider their proposal to increase fares after Hari Raya,” he said.

However, Fomca secretary-general Muhamad Sha’ani Abdullah said he did not think that the recent reduction would be able to help offset the living costs of the low-income group.
