Deferment Of PTPTN Loans Must Take Into Account Job Market

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The government proposal allowing borrowers of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans with low salary to defer payment should take into account the present economic situation.

"The deferment for low salary employees workers must be based on the economic situation and the difficult job market," said Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) commissioner Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria.

At SUHAKAM, Jayasooria is the chairman of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

He proposed that the government allow those earning RM1,000-RM1,500 monthly to defer loan payment.

"Such a salary is deemed low particularly for those who live in urban areas," he said commenting on a statement by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin that low paid employees would be allowed to defer loan payment due to the high cost of living.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (FOMCA) secretary-general Muhammad Shaani Abdullah said the government should come out with a mechanism detailing the payment to be made by the borrowers.

"Rather than deferring payment, the government can relax payment by reducing the amount or rescheduling the payment," he said.

Muhammad Sha'ani also welcomed the government proposal to reduce the PTPTN service charge of three percent.
