KUALA LUMPUR: Road resurfacing works along the North-South Expressway near Sungkai, Perak, has resulted in traffic congestion along the highway.

Highway users have complained that they did not have any alternative but to stay on the highway and suffer delays.

A driver who uses the route frequently complained that the jam had been going on for days.

“It is very sad to see a traffic crawl on the highway,” he said.

Khalilah Mohd Talha, corporate communications general manager for PLUS Expressways Bhd, the concessionaire of the highway, said the company was constructing a third lane for the road.

She said the job should be completed before the end of this year.

“We regret any inconvenience caused to the public. We hope the public will bear with us during the widening and construction of the third lane. When the third lane is completed, travel along the expressway will be faster,” she added.

Fomca secretary-general Muhammad Shaani Abdullah said any widening by PLUS should not cause undue delay to those using the highway.

“The inconvenience should be reasonable but they tell me a one-kilometre traffic jam is reasonable.

“It is not fair to state that kind of traffic crawl is reasonable because people using the highway will be delayed for appointments,” he said.

Muhammad said repair works should involve diversions and prior warnings.
